MAR 20-23 | 41st Annual “International Collegiate Mining Games” - Downtown Virginia City

Virginia City, home to the largest strike in the world, hosts students from across the globe this March 20 – 23, 2019 as mining returns to the Comstock with the 41st annual International Collegiate Mining Competition. With an estimated 200 participants, this year’s event is hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno’s Mining Team, Mackay Muckers.

The collegiate mining competition began in 1978 in honor and remembrance of the fallen miners from the Sunshine Mine fire in 1972. The competition consists of traditional mining methods. There are seven events that make up the competition: Single Jack Hand Steel, Jackleg Drilling, Hand Mucking, Gold Panning, Track Stand, Swede Saw and Survey.


APR 27-28 | 48th Annual “Virginia City Grand Prix” - Downtown Virginia City

“C Street” gets loud as the roar of motorcycles hits full throttle during the Virginia City Grand Prix, one of the largest and most competitive off-road motorcycle races in the west. For the first time this year, racing takes place on C Street throughout the day so spectators can get an up-close and personal view of this high-speed race. Virginia City hosts nearly 30 of the best chili cooks in the West for the 36th annual Chili on the Comstock, all competing to win your vote for the best chili and people’s choice awards. Enjoy chili and other snacks, family-friendly activities, a Fun with the Runs 5K and the Fireball Saloon Crawl.

MAY 25 | V&T Steam Train Kick-Off - Virginia & Truckee Depot

The Virginia City-Gold Hill route departs from F Street in Virginia City from the original 1870 depot to Gold Hill. With seven departures daily, the train passes by 17 Bonanza mines on this scenic 35-minute ride. Visit here for details and ticket details.

The Carson City-Virginia City route departs from the Eastgate Depot in Carson City. Meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns with this relaxing, all-day train excursion. JUN 1 | 15th Annual “Reno-Tahoe & Comstock Odyssey Relay - Bucket of Blood Saloon

The Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure (RTO) is a relay from Reno to Lake Tahoe and back to Reno making a large 178 mile loop around the Reno-Tahoe region. The relay starts at Wingfield Park along the Truckee River in downtown Reno, passes through Truckee, Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, Genoa, Carson City and Virginia City before returning to Reno and finishing at Idlewild Park.

The course is divided into 36 legs or segments, with each leg averaging about 5 miles.


JUN 1-2 | Street Vibrations Spring Rally - Downtown Virginia City

Virginia City plays host to a raucous celebration of music, metal and motorcycles with Street Vibrations. The roar of motorcycles shakes the ground as thousands of bikers ride to the Comstock for good food, live entertainment and plenty of fun.

AUG 2-3 | 33rd Annual “Hot August Nights Kick-Off & Cruise - Downtown Virginia City

Step back in time to revel in the sights and sounds of yesteryear. The region’s most prominent classic car gathering, Hot August Nights, kicks off in Virginia City. The town comes alive with rumbling engines and nostalgic tunes to kick off the event’s 33rd year. Walk the historic streets to see an array of cars and enjoy free, daily entertainment. As the host venue for the official kick-off, it’s sure to be a party with free live music, a poker walk, nightly cruises and a celebrity Show-n-Shine.

AUG 24-25 | 4th Annual “Virginia City Rodeo & Fiesta Del Charro” - Virginia City Arena & Fairgrounds

Don your cowboy boots and hats for a rodeo event including a long-horn cattle drive down C Street, a mutton busting tournament, a Hispanic rodeo – Fiesta del Charro, and wrapping up with a street dance on C Street. The rodeo is produced by renowned promoter Cotton Rosser and the Flying U Rodeo. Get up close and personal with bull riders, wild broncs, escaramuzas, dancing horses, kids’ mutton busting and all the sights, sounds and smells of a Hispanic rodeo. AUG 31 - SEP 2 | Civil War Days & Battle Train - Downtown Virginia City

History comes to life each Labor Day weekend as the Great Civil War Reenactors bring epic battles to Virginia City. Hundreds of reenactors battle out great scenes on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad and even right in the middle of C Street as part of the Labor Day Parade. Dress in your finest Victorian garb and join the ladies for High Tea, or take a ride on an evening champagne train and see a battle from your seat.

Celebrate the American labor movement and all the achievements of workers in our country up on the Comstock. Virginia City is proud to honor and celebrate the men and women who have made our country what it is today.


SEP 6-8 | 60th Annual “International Camel & Ostrich Races” - Virginia City Arena & Fairgrounds

For 60 years, camels, ostriches and even zebras have come to Virginia City for the annual International Camel & Ostrich Races. This hilarious annual tradition dates back to the 1950s, and features jockeys precariously perched on their beasts as they maneuver the track at high speeds, aiming for a win among the cheering audience in this historic mining town.

A comical racing spectacle that the entire family will enjoy, the event includes a fair-like midway with vendors and treats for the family. You can even catch a ride on a camel – a photo op not to be missed.

Saturday, September 7 schedule:
10 AM – Noon – First Performance
12 – 12:30 PM – Camel Hump on C Street
2 – 4 PM – Second Performance

The three-day event offers general admission, shaded and a VIP experience that allows you to see the entire racing action up close. Friday is a special evening performance, Hot Camel Nights. Sunday is Dolan Auto Group Family Day with free camel rides for the first 100 kids.


SEP 14 | 52nd Annual “100 Mile Endurance Horse Race” - Downtown Virginia City

The race consists of three loops (51, 25 and 24 miles), each returning to base camp in Virginia City. The trail covers hardpack and rocky terrain on historical wagon (now jeep) roads with some sandy single track footing and several mountain climbs. There is also pavement through town and across highways. Elevations range between 5000 and 7800 feet. Each loop is marked with a different color of ribbon, along with chalk and glow sticks (after dark).

The ride starts in front of the Delta Saloon at 5 a.m., Saturday.

Virginia City 100 is the final ride of the Triple Crown Challenge.


SEP 27-29 | Street Vibrations Fall Rally - Downtown Virginia City

The Comstock starts rumbling when Virginia City hosts this raucous celebration of music, metal and motorcycles. Thousands of bikers cruise into this historic mining town for good food, live entertainment and plenty of fun.

OCT 5-6 | 30th Annual “World Championship Outhouse Races” - Downtown Virginia City

This is one time and place where potty humor is accepted and encouraged – the 30th annual World Championship Outhouse Races. This free event dates back when outdoor plumbing was outlawed in Virginia City, angry residents took to the streets with their outhouses in protest, and a tradition was born. This hilarious event pits teams of costumed outhouse racers against each other in an all-out potty race pushing their home-made outhouses down C Street toward the toilet paper finish line to claim the latrine title. The Parade of Outhouses begins Saturday at noon with races immediately following.

The Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl starts at 11 AM, with check-in starting at 10:30 AM. It continues through to 5 PM. Prize winners are announced during the Parade of Lights which starts at 5 PM.
